What if you can live in and work from Bali? What if you can also stay for a long-time problem-free and, more importantly, tax-free in Bali?
That’s just nonsense, some might say. However, believe it or not, that bright future is coming for all foreign digital nomads and remote workers in Indonesia!
With Indonesian tourism moving from ‘Sun, Sea, and Sand,’ towards, ‘Serenity, Spirituality, and Sustainability’, the Indonesian Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno, announced that Indonesia will introduce a new kind of visa for digital nomads.
This visa will be a gamechanger in Indonesian tourism and incredible opportunities for all foreigners who want to try living in and working from Bali – the Island of God.
So, what is this new digital nomad visa? How does it work? And what benefits or opportunities will it bring to foreign remote workers wishing to work in Indonesia?
Well, worry no more because Catur Perkasa Land is here to tell you all about Indonesia’s new digital nomad visa. Let’s read on along and find out!
First and foremost, know that this new Indonesian Digital Nomad Visa has not been implemented yet. The primary reason for that is because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In fact, this visa plan is not even a new plan at all. Indonesian Tourism Minister, Sandiaga Uno, mentioned that this plan was first proposed in 2021, but was rejected due to pandemic concerns.
However, the good news is that COVID-19 is becoming more manageable in Indonesia. As COVID-19 slowly transitions into endemic, Sandiaga Uno said that 2022 is the perfect time to relaunch this visa plan.
Sandiaga Uno hopes that this plan will bring 3.6 million foreign remote workers. This is because research shows that Indonesia is a popular choice of place to live among 95% of remote workers.
Moreover, he also hopes that this program will provide one million jobs for Indonesians as well as positively impact the development of the local economy.

Ever since early March 2022, Indonesia has re-opened its tourism sector to the world. To boost this great tourism restart, Indonesia has issued the convenient Visa of Arrival. As of June 2022, this Visa on Arrival is now available for foreigners in 72 countries.
However, although this Visa on Arrival is convenient, it does not answer most digital nomads’ problems in Indonesia. This is because digital nomads in Indonesia are currently living in a legal grey area. After all, visa usually does not legally allow foreigners to work in Indonesia.
Plus, an Indonesian visa only lasts you a valid stay of 30 to 60 days. Even with multiple extensions, these visas will only go as long as 180 days or 6 months.
This is why the Indonesian digital nomad visa is a huge gamechanger. The new visa is designed to tackle all of the aforementioned problems. It also seeks to make living and working much easier and safer for foreign remote workers in Indonesia.
The digital nomad visa will exempt remote workers from the need to pay Indonesian taxes. This means you will be able to live tax-free in Indonesia as long as the company you are working remotely from is not an Indonesian company. Furthermore, this long-term visa is designed to allow you to stay for up to five years in Indonesia.
